STAFF Advancement

School leaders are all aware of professional development.  It’s necessary for teachers and school administrators to maintain their certifications, as well as to advance to higher levels of responsibility.  Continuing education also deepens one’s knowledge of particular topics of personal importance and interest, and makes us grow personally as well as professionally.

But what about professional leadership development?

According to TrainingIndustry.com, there are 5 necessary skills to help leaders develop into high-performing, world class leaders:

Coaching
Accountability
Change Management
Influence and Negotiation
Communication

Unfortunately, in the business world, it’s usually management and supervisory skills that are developed and honed.  But notice that management is connected to change.  When it comes to people, coaching is necessary.

Think of a sports team.  All the members of the team have talent.  They participate in training exercises to hone and sharpen their skills, and they work with coaches to help them focus their efforts on particular skill sets which may not be on a par with their other abilities.  Coaches evaluate the circumstances at hand, analyzes them, then suggests actions that can be taken or corrections that can be made to advance to the next milestone, grow to the next level, and sustain one’s competitive differentiating advantage.
